Three Features that Every Memory Foam Dog Bed Should Have

High quality memory foam dog beds are worth the price. Imitators are not.

Three Features that Every Memory Foam Dog Bed Should Have Let me rephrase that. High quality memory foam dog beds are worth the price. Imitators are not. How do you know if you are looking at a high quality memory foam dog bed or an imposter? Consider the following three tips on what to look for in your dog's future bed.

Every Dog Needs a Memory Foam Dog Bed
  1. High Quality Memory Foam
  2.

The first thing you want to consider when looking into memory foam dog beds is the quality of memory foam. Let me back up. First you want to make sure the bed is actually made of memory foam. There are many companies out there that will make their beds of memory fill, or shredded memory foam, or orthopedic foam, or whatever. None of these are memory foam. Memory foam is a particular type of foam that is designed to react to your dog's body heat and body weight, and prevent your dog from experiencing pressure points. None of the above mentioned foams can do this. (Not even shredded memory foam. Memory foam needs to be intact in order to work.) So, the first step in making sure you are getting your dog the bed she deserves, is to make sure you get your dog a bed made of actual memory foam.

An easy way to confirm if a bed you are considering is made of memory foam is to ask what grade the memory foam is rated at. All memory foam is rated, and most memory foam falls between 2lb memory foam and 5lb memory foam. While I could get into the scientific specifics of what 2lb memory foam is, let me just say this. Memory foam that is rated at 2lbs or lower is considered low quality memory foam and memory foam rated at 3lbs-5lbs or higher is considered high quality memory foam. Memory foam rated at 3lb--5lbs or higher will last longer, meaning even after repeated use the foam will continue to react to your dog's body heat and weight. Low quality memory foam will wear out much faster.

Now, if you are considering a memory foam dog bed, and the dog bed manufactures don't list or don't tell you what grade of foam they are using you can assume one of two things. Either the bed is not actually made of memory foam, and hence cannot be rated, or the bed is made of memory foam, but it is very low quality memory foam. High quality memory foam dog bed manufacturers always list the grade of their memory foam. They do this because memory foam is expensive, and they want their customers to know what they are paying for.

  3. Supportive Backing Foam
  4.

Now, a huge part of a memory foam dog bed is the supportive backing foam of the bed. You know that memory foam dog beds are desirable because they prevent your dog from developing pressure points while sleeping. Memory foam dog beds can only do this though, if the bed is built with supportive backing foam. Consider if you were to sleep on your mattress without a box spring. You would sink so far into the mattress that you would touch the floor, and hence develop pressure points. The same can bed said about your dog sleeping on a memory foam dog bed without supportive backing foam. That supportive backing foam is the box spring of your dog's bed. If you want your dog's memory foam dog bed to prevent your dog from developing pressure points, you need to make sure the bed is built with supportive backing foam.

  5. Liners
  6.

Another vital element to a memory foam dog bed is a liner. Memory foam cannot be washed. If it is washed it gets ruined. So, in order for a memory foam dog bed to work, the memory foam must be protected. That is what a liner is for. At minimum a memory foam dog bed liner will be waterproof. This will prevent the bed from every needing to be washed because the bed can't absorb any liquids.

Consider this though. Memory foam needs airflow in order to maintain its loft. Loft is key in allowing the bed to continue to react to your dog's body heat and body weight. So, if you want your dog's bed to last for years, you need to get her a bed that is built with a liner that is not only waterproof but breathable as well. Buddy Beds, a high quality memory foam dog bed maker, does make their liners to be waterproof and breathable. Not only that, but Buddy Beds' liners are also anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, anti-static, and hypoallergenic.
